The Peñasco Valley Heritage Plaza will focus on cultural preservation, economic development, and community engagement.

PVHPS Hosts First Adobe Workshop: A Hands-On Cultural Experience

On Saturday, July 20th, PVHPS hosted its first-ever adobe workshop at the St. Anthony school grounds, welcoming over 40 participants. This event was partly funded by the Historic Preservation Education Foundation and marks the beginning of many cultural education opportunities PVHPS aims to offer. These initiatives align with our mission to preserve the rich heritage of the Peñasco Valley and empower the community to learn and sustain these traditions.

The workshop was led by local adobe experts, Edward "Bardo" Gonzales and Ignacio Gonzales, along with Francisco Uviña, a UNM professor of architecture specializing in Earthen & Alternative Construction & Materials. Participants spent the day making 320 adobe bricks using two methods: a traditional approach involving a "volcano" mixing technique and a modern approach using a mixer. The bricks produced will be directly used in the rehabilitation of the school building.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our maestros, the dedicated participants, Amanda Lopez for catering the workshop, and the Historic Preservation Education Foundation.
